Why Your Nightly Skincare Routine Matters

You probably hear that washing your face and having an uncomplicated morning routine is the most important thing when it comes to your skin’s health. And though there is a sparkle of truth to that, many forget that their nightly routine is just as important. With all the different face washes, masks, and makeup products out there, it can be quite difficult finding a healthy skin care routine that fits flawlessly with your skin type.

I have oily skin so this post will be geared more towards those who have the same skin type and struggles as I do but, please remember that what works for me might not work for your skin and vice a versa. Also, the products that I will be recommending are tailored to those with my skin type but most companies will typically have variations of that same product available.

  1. Open Your Pores– At night, I first make sure that my pores are opened so they can be cleaned deeply. There are two ways I do this: One way is through taking a hot shower where the steam naturally opens my pores before I apply any product. The second way, if I want to open my pores separately from taking a shower, is taking a heated and clean washcloth and put it over my face for at least 20 seconds. This preps the skin for the next step.
  2.  Cleanse your face– I LOVE using Glam Glow’s Super Cleanse Mud to Foam daily cleanser. It tightens my pores, cleans my skin, and doesn’t leave me feeling too dry. I also will switch up my routine by using products by Clean & Clear especially their Morning Burst Shine Control and their Detoxifying Burst cleanser. These cleansers don’t leave my skin feeling dry or damaged afterwards and they smell amazing! With your pores opened that is when your skin is at its most vulnerable point because of the chance it has to attract dirt and potentially get blackheads, whiteheads, and cysts (for my oily skin chickas). How I avoid that is making sure my hands are clean (if using them to clean my face) and applying my cleanser for more than 20 seconds.
  3. Moisturize– Having oily skin, I know this word can be like a strange contradiction but believe it or not, oily skin secrets as much oil as it does sometimes because of the lack of moisture to the skin! At night I might decide to go a little heavier than I would normally since it will be absorbed in by morning. I typically use an organic, all natural coconut oil to help eliminate uneven skin patches and acne scars. As a backup I use the Clean & Clear Oil-free moisturizer. It makes my skin feel cleaner and fresher.

Cream– To seal in what products I’ve used, I’ll “set” it with a cream. I sometimes use a prescribed Tretinoin cream to help with smoothing out my skin but I adore the Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream. It not only makes my skin feel so soft and when I wake up, I also notice my skin has a healthy glow as well.
